Thousands of trucks and railroad cars would transport radioactivewaste through metropolitan Chicago if a national dump is built inNevada, a study has found.
The federal government plans to open a dump in Nevada in 2010 ifthe Yucca Mountain site is found to be suitable.
The dump would take highly radioactive spent fuel from about 110nuclear reactors, including 13 in northern Illinois operated byCommonwealth Edison.
Because Chicago is a transportation hub, at least 25 percent ofthe wastes would pass through this area, according to a study by theNevada Nuclear Waste Project Office, a state agency that opposes thedump.
